Manga Synopsis:
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is japanese manga series what is about a very pessimistic high school teacher named Nozomu Itoshiki who tries to hang himself on a cherry blossom tree. But he is saved by an extremely optimistic girl known only as Kafuka Fuura (Pen Name). She explains to him that it is simply unimaginable that he would hang himself on such a nice day, especially in front of such beautiful trees. She decides to nickname Nozomu "Pink Supervisor" and offers to pay him fifty yen to call him by that nickname. After having enough of the strange girl, Nozomu bolts to the school and starts his homeroom class, but the attempt was in vain as he finds that the girl is one of his students.

Itoshiki Nozomu
Manga Info: He is the world's most negative person. To his way of thinking, there is no hope or meaning in this existence. Kafuka writes his name horizontally and his name reads "Zetsubou" (Despair). He often shouts "I'm in despair!" and attempts suicide several times with his rope but he doesn't die. Most of his students seem to have feelings for him.
Fuura Kafuka (Pen name)
Manga Info: She is very strange and optimistic student who always sees everything in the single most positive light possible (the opposite of her sensei). She often has bizarre, childishly optimistic explanations for grim situations, calling suicide by hanging "becoming taller" and the act of stalking "deep love. She has a strange obsession with aliens. In addition, her recent actions; watching the school burn down with a satisfied grin, and the more harmless act of disguising herself as a college girl and making food for her teacher and his nephew hint at a much darker personality. Another hint is the fact that one or more of the other characters are mortally terrified of her; for example, when Kafuka tries to contact Meru through eyes , Meru can sense only bloodlust in her eyes.
Her real name is has not been officially revealed. However, she was referred to as "An-chan" in a flashback and the surname "Akagi" appears in the attendance book. So her real name would be "An Akagi". When Kafuka meets her sensei, he comments her personality as Anne of Green Gables.
Tsunetsuki Matoi
Manga Info: A girl who stalks whoever she falls in love with. Her hair is short. She is also known for changing her manner of dress to partner those of her current love interest. Her former boyfriend is Takashi. She falls in love with Nozomu after misinterpreting one of his statements as a confession of love. After that, she changes her clothes as kimono and follows him everywhere he goes. She thinks that this is her duty to read Nozomu's mail (from his mail box) and disposing of them before he gets a chance to read them. Her name is a pun on tsune tsukimatoi , which means "always dangling after".
Kitsu Chiri
Manga Info: A girl who who demands all things in her life to be precise and equal. Her hair style was curly and is parted in the center. She'll set things straight and is usually extremely cruel and violent in her ways. She is also very knowledgeable in areas that revolve around violent international historical events. Her ultimate weapon is a shovel. After she and her sensei (Itoshiki Nozomu) accidentally took a nap in the same bed, she wants him to marry her.
Kobushi Abiru
Manga Info: A pervert girl who is always injured. Her friends and teachers think she is the victim of Domestic Violence (DV). Her injuries are actually caused by irate animals reacting to having their tails pulled by her. She has differently-colored eyes because of a transplant when she was younger, but this feature is not obvious because her transplanted eye is usually covered by an eyepatch or bandages.
Komori Kiri
Manga Info: This girl is a hikikomori. Her friend (Kafuka) thinks her is a zashiki warashi. Kafuka offers her sensei (Nozomu) to seal Komori in her room but fail. When Nozomu sees Komori, he opens her hair and praises her that she is so beautiful and have snow skin. Komori is the one who Nozomu write her name in his list (Double Suicide). She also falls for Nozumu. She takes up permanent residence in school. She is cooking for him doing his laundry.
Hito Nami
Manga Info: A normal girl. She takes offense at being called "normal," which she considers undesirable.
Her name derives from the Japanese term hitonami, meaning "run-of-the-mill. She attended elementary school with Kafuka (her teacher called her "An-chan"), who may have been the first person to call her normal.
Fujiyoshi Harumi
Manga Info: She likes Doujinshi (Yaoi). Many athletic clubs want to recruite her because she possesses amazing athletic abilities. She has three older brothers and they are all involved in the anime industry. Her name is a combination of fujoshi (yaoi fangirls).
Sekiutsu Maria Tarou
Manga Info: She isn't Japanese. Kafuka calls her "Matarou". She purchased the birth certificate of a male student and is attending school under his name. Her weak points are shoes and panties. She will feel dizzy when she wears them. "Sekiutsu Taro" derives from seki-uttaro, which means "I'll sell you my register".
Otonashi Meru
Manga Info: She can't talk. If she wants to tell anything, she will send mail via her cell phone. Her family name, Otonashi, means "soundless", and her name is Meru (Meru = Mail). Her e-mail address is "hazukashigariyasan", which means "full of shyness". Her father called her "Meru Meru".
Kimura Kaere
Manga Info: She has two personality. One is an japenese girl named Kaede, a gentle personality well-versed in Japanese culture. The other is a foreigner named Kaere who is disgusted by Japanese culture and touts the bizarre ways of the country she is supposedly from, though what country is never explained. Her favourite words is "I'll sue you".
Kaga Ai
Manga Info: A shy, insecure girl who constantly apologizes for trivial matters and things she didn't even do. Her name in Eastern order sounds like kagai ("perpetrate").
Ōkusa Manami
Manga Info: A married high-schooler who works multiple jobs to pay off her husband's debts. Her name derives from okusama-nami ("a married person").
Mitama Mayo
Manga Info: people simply assume she is a good girl who only looks evil and whatever she did was not her doing. She has a crush on her teacher (Nozomu). She expresses her love through stabbing him with a knife. Her name derives from mita mama yo, which means "What she is is exactly what she looks."
Itoshiki Rin
Manga Info: She is the youngest sister of Itoshiki family. She is seventeen years old. She has revealed her willingness to marry out of the Itoshiki family in the hope of abandoning her unwanted name. Rin eventually transfers to Nozomu's school and becomes a student in his class (althrough she's seventeen years old). She likes teasing her brother (Nozomu). When her name is written horizontally it resembles zetsurin ("unequaled"). Kafuka called her that name, she'll ask her sword from her servants.
Itoshiki Mikoto
Manga Info: This person is the third son of Itoshiki family. He is a doctor and the owner of the private "Itoshiki Clinic. His name is written horizontally it is zetsumei. He will be very upset and lose control when he is referred to as "Zetsumei-doctor" (Death doctor).
Itoshiki Majiru
Manga Info: This child is The son of Enishi and Nozomu's nephew. When his parents abandons him, he live with Nozomu. His name becomes zekkō ("breach in a relationship").
Tokita
Manga Info: He is a butler of Itoshiki family. He can collect any information greatly.
Usui Kagerō
Manga Info: He's real class president. Kafuka thinks that he's a fairy because of his existence. His head is..... He has a major crush on Abiru and love her because of her legs. His name is a pun on the phrase kage ga usui ("overshadowed"). The usui also refers to thinning hairline.
Kudō Jun
Manga Info: Jun is Genius Storyteller. He read all books in library (before his sensei read them). His stories usually drive other characters to tears. Nozomu thinks Jun can read his mind.
Kino Kuniya
Manga Info: Kuniya is library commitee member. He interestes in Ai Kaga and thinks that Jun is his rival. He like strange clothes.
Arai Chie
Manga Info: Another teacher. She has an excellent figure and a large bust. Nozomu usually does anything she orders him to do as he states her eyes are terrifying but he goes to her anytime he has one of his suicidal breakdowns brought on because of a random conspiracy theory.
